About Us
UHURU Centre is a community-centered non-profit organization dedicated to addressing teenage pregnancy and its related challenges in Uganda. We empower young mothers and vulnerable girls through education, vocational skills, health awareness, and sustainable livelihood projects. Our goal is to restore dignity, create support systems, and equip them with tools to reclaim their future.
Background:
Teenage Pregnancy in Uganda
Teenage pregnancy remains a critical public health and socio-economic issue in Uganda. According to the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS), nearly 25% of girls aged 15-19 are either pregnant or have given birth. This issue is more prevalent in rural and underserved areas.
Most Affected Regions
Eastern Uganda: Teso and Busoga sub-regions
Northern Uganda: Acholi and Lango sub-regions
Central Uganda: Wakiso, Mukono, and Kampala districts report high urban teenage pregnancies
West Nile: Limited education access and cross-border influence increase vulnerability

1 in 4 girls aged 15–19 is pregnant or has a child
Over 300,000 teenagers get pregnant annually
COVID-19 school closures led to a sharp spike in cases
WHAT WE DO:
We provide opportunities for young mothers to return to school or
acquire vocational skills that will enable them to secure employment and become financially independent. This includes:
Providing educational support to allow for completion of
primary and secondary school.
Enrolling in vocational training centres to learn skills such as
tailoring, hairdressing, and catering, etc.
Providing ongoing mentorship and support to help young
mothers overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
