perpetuate cycles of poverty, limit educational opportunities,
and contribute to a range of health and social problems.

Root Causes of Teenage Pregnancy

Teenage pregnancy is a complex issue driven by a combination of interconnected factors:
Poverty: Economic hardship forces many girls into early marriages or transactional sex for survival.

Lack of Education: Limited access to quality education and information about sexual and reproductive health increases vulnerability.
Cultural Norms: Harmful traditional practices, such as early marriage and female genital mutilation, contribute to the problem.
Gender Inequality: Societal norms that prioritize male education and opportunities over those of females exacerbate the problem.
Limited Access to SRHR Services: Insufficient access to contraception and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services increases the risk of unintended pregnancies.
Lack of Parental Guidance and Communication: Inadequate parental guidance and open communication about sexuality leave adolescents vulnerable to risky behaviors.

Medical and Health Challenges

Teenage mothers face a range of serious medical and health challenges, including:
Increased Risk of Maternal Mortality: Teenage mothers are at a higher risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
Obstructed Labor and Fistula: Young girls’ bodies may not be fully developed, leading to obstructed labor and obstetric fistula.
Premature Birth and Low Birth Weight: Babies born to teenage mothers are more likely to be premature or have low birth weight.
Increased Risk of STIs and HIV: Teenage girls are more vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Postpartum Depression: Teenage mothers are at increased risk of postpartum depression and other mental health issues.

Addressing teenage pregnancy in Uganda requires collaboration with international organizations and donors. Uhuru Centre actively seeks partnerships to:
Secure Funding: Obtain financial support for our programs and initiatives.
Share Best Practices: Exchange knowledge and expertise with organizations working on similar issues globally.
